Defining your target market allows you to attract better clients which convert into less frustration, tailored content, and more sales and reps.

Your target market is the person or people you would like to work with every day.

target market is your ideal clients

When we first started our business – our target market was anyone that wanted to work with us.  While it helped us get started, I can’t say it was the best way to get started. We spent so much time with people that didn’t get our personalities, passions or the value of what we were doing. Plus, we ended up with a lot of people that were wanting something for nothing and kind of negative.

We spent so much time with these trouble-customers that we had no time for anything else. These trouble-customers would even frighten some of our best customers when we had them in an accountability group together. Something had to change.

That’s when we started to see there were enough people out there that we wanted to work with and help.

We started narrowing down who our target market – who we wanted to target and work with daily – would be. Since then, we’ve been able to tailor all of our content, ads, and offerings to a certain type person. Consequently, we started to attract the right type of people for our business!

Needless to say, knowing who you want to work with by defining your target market can improve every aspect of your business because your ideal clients will start coming to you because your awesome content connects with them! It saves you time and energy because they understand you and your goal to help them!

3 Tips for Defining Your Target Market

  1. Don’t Be Afraid to Go Specific – You’ll be amazed by how many people will fall into your target market. Aim for a specific age and location. You’ll want to consider their gender, income, relationship, and what their household looks like.
  2. Picture Your Ideal Client in Your Mind – While a lot of people will fall into your target market it’s important to picture one person. You’ll be reaching anyone in that target market, but by picturing 1 person that fits your ideal client will help you write your content and keep their needs in mind throughout your business model.
  3. Have a Plan for Your Ideal Client – As your target market gets to know you, their goals and needs will change. It’s up to you to guide them through a process to help better themselves. You might start with something for free and fun that targets your whole market. Then, offer something with more value with a small price tag. As you continue to build your relationship, you’ll have some people stop at a level, but you should always have a plan for those that want to continue their journey with you.
