We started using Facebook for business in 2011, and it’s changed so much since then! Engagement is more important than ever!
So while we’ll share a few techniques to get Facebook Likes, the real key is creating content that Facebook’s algorithm loves to show your followers!
We’ll not only show you how to set up your page and increase your Facebook likes, but we’ll also share what we find helps to increase engagement and grow your page!

How to Make a Facebook Business Page
Facebook has made creating a Business Page easier than ever! Just go to facebook.com/business and click Create a Page in the top right. Then, you’ll select “Business or Brand” or “Community or Public Figure” based on your goal.
Should Entrepreneurs Pick Business or Public Figure?
After you make a Facebook for Business page, you’ll need to add photos.
I suggest always using a well-lit, professional photo as your profile – even if you have a logo. People will connect with your face more than a design.
You’ll also be able to add a cover photo. You can choose to show a product or even a collage here. We make our Facebook cover photos using Canva. You can also hire a graphic designer on Fiverr to create one for you even on a small budget.
You cover photo should be 640 pixels by 360 pixels for smartphones.
Once you have the image made, you should see “Upload Cover Photo” on your Like page. It’ll be top left as of April 2019 on a desktop.
Adding Text Information
Next you’ll want to add your information. This not only helps your followers learn about you, but it also tells Facebook what you are all about.
Username and Vanity URL
This is where you’ll be able to tell people to find you on Facebook. This should be short, simple to spell, and easy to remember.
If you have a blog or Instagram, we suggest making your username the same across platforms. For example ours is @kimandkalee or facebook.com/kimandkalee. If the exact name isn’t available – aim for something close to it.
Along with your username, you can add in a short description of your business and contact information. Make sure not to skip the contact information because that’s how brands and customers may contact you!
You can also add in your slogan and brand story as well.
Making Your First Post
Once you have gotten your images and profile the way you want it, it’s time to make a post! We love including a call to action to like, comment, or tag a friend so that you can start growing your page!
For example, your first post may be a great photo and caption or video saying something like:
“Did you know [Business Name] was created by [Your Name] to [Your Mission]? Are you passionate about the same things? Let me know in the comments below & tag a friend who you think would like this page too!”
You can also add on additional features when you make a Facebook for Business Like Page.
- Call to Action – To add a Call to Action just click “Add a Button” below your cover photo and select the button you want from the dropdown menu. It’ll give you instructions to add it.
- Pinned Post – To keep a post at the top of your page, just click the post in the top right and select Pin to Top.
- Like Other Pages – To like another page as your business page, just go to the brand you like, click below the Page’s cover photo and choose “Like as Your Page” and click submit.
- Verification – Here’s a great guide to getting verified on Facebook and getting that infamous blue check mark by your name.
- Settings – Messaging, Notification, Admins, and Preferred Page Audience are all under Settings, as well as, the option to allow people to review your brand.
- Tabs – To add or organize additional features to your page, go to Settings > Templates and Tabs.
- Add Reviews – You can allow people to review your page or business under the Templates and Tabs feature.
- Instant Replies – You can send an auto-response to anyone that messages you by going to Settings > Messaging > Response Assistant and turn on instant replies.
- Page Insights – These insights will show you how your page is doing, as well as, when your audience is online (under Posts).
Facebook Page vs Facebook Group
Once Facebook updated its algorithm, a lot of people noticed their groups were doing better than their Business Page. So they started using groups as a Business Page, and now – honestly, even groups are being seen less unless they have high engagement (just like Pages).
The reason is – a Facebook Page and a Facebook Group are very different.
Facebook Pages allow you to create a public persona and connect with anyone interacting with your page.
Facebook Groups on the other hand are for small groups of people to connect over common interests, groups, or causes. Groups also have different privacy settings compared to Pages.
So your Facebook Business page should act as a storefront or place to share updates on products and services, and a Facebook group should be used to connect over common interests.
How to Grow a Facebook Page
Now, we’ll look at 3 ways to initially grow a Facebook Page, as well as, tips to help you increase Facebook Likes and Engagement down the line.
When we first launched Kim and Kalee’s Facebook Page we did a “Dream Home Office Giveaway!” This was perfect for our audience because we wanted to connect with other entrepreneurs working from home.
It helped us grow our following by 522 likes in just a few weeks! This helped us build creditability right away, and I think it validated us to Facebook a little bit as well.
2. Connect with Others
Anytime someone comments on your post, make sure to engage with them in some way.
You also can share your Facebook Page content onto your personal page to get it in front of more eyes.
Another idea to connect with others is to find Facebook groups that share similar interests to you. If you’re bringing value to the group over time, you may approach the group admin about sharing your page or brand.
Another type of group you’ll find on Facebook is “sharing groups.” These groups continue to get more and more strict as social media algorithms get smarter, but these groups allow you to share a link to a piece of content and have people engage with it if you’ll engage with other members’ content as well.
While these groups have been helpful to us in the past, I’d recommend finding 3-5 friends in your industry through online networking and asking them to follow you page and comment as they see your posts. You should, of course, do the same for them as well.
3. Suggest See First
As you just launch your Like Page, your first few fans are probably just that – fans. They’ll be likely to help you out and want to see your content first.
You can help them see your content in their newsfeed by asking them to click “Follow” on your Page and then click “See First”. This will put your content at the top of their newsfeed from then on out!
We like to post about this feature 1-2x a month for new followers as well. The more eyes and engagement you get on your posts the better!
4. Invite Friends to Like a Page on Facebook
If you know your Facebook Friends would want to support you by liking your page, you can invite them to do so!
To invite your friends to like your page, go to your page and click Community on the lefthand side. Then you’ll see a place to Invite on the right. Type in your friends’ names and click invite.

Beat the Facebook Algorithm & Increase Engagement
Now that you’re growing your Facebook page, your content is going to be key to gaining engagement and reach.
As you’ll see you have 15 content options on Facebook including:
- Just Text
- Facebook Live
- Get Messages
- Write Note
- Support Nonprofit
- Watch Party
- Create an Event
- Provide an Offer
- Create a Job Listing
The main ones we use are text, photo, video, Facebook Live, and polls. We suggest playing with at least these 5 options for 2 weeks to see what your audience responds to the best.

We suggest reading Gary Vaynerchuk’s Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook. It’s such a great book on creating content and mixing in your product in a genuine way that converts!
Another great program, though more intensive and pricey, is Marketing Impact Academy.
You may also include shared posts from other pages.
One strategy to increase your Facebook engagement is to share other pages’ content.
While this takes time to find, it’s been a really great strategy for boosting our reach, engagement and even blog traffic. So we’d recommend trying it for at least 2 weeks to see if it helps you too.
You’ll want to find other pages that your community will like, and then you want to schedule their best posts to your page.
How do you do that?
It’s easiest to do it from a desktop at this time.
Once you find a post you like, click the timestamp, copy the link, and then paste that link into a post on your page. The other page’s post will generate automatically, and you can then tailor your wording around that post.
You may even find 3-5 friends in the same industry and be able to swap links each week to keep this process fast and easy!

7 Tips to On Managing Your Facebook Page
We’ve shared how to make your Facebook Business Page and get more likes, but we still have a few more tips to Facebook to share with you!
1. Focus on Trending Topics
Love the Bachelorette? Huge Game of Thrones fan? Talk about it!
We try to stay away from politics, but other than that – trending topics can help you get seen on Facebook. We suggest asking a question or for feedback on a topic so that people will not only react to your post but comment as well.
2. Set up a Preferred Audience
Since everyone and their grandmother (literally) are on Facebook, it can be helpful to tell Facebook who your ideal client really is.
You can do this from your Facebook page by going to Settings > Preferred Page Audience.
You can tell Facebook your client’s location, age, gender, hobbies, and language.
On your Facebook business page, go to settings> preferred page audience
3. Feature a Lead Magnet as Your Pinned Post
A lead magnet, or something you give away in exchange for your reader’s email address, is perfect to feature in a pinned post.
Your lead magnet should be something of value that your ideal client would love, and they’ll appreciate it being at the top of your timeline. Plus, it’ll be easy for them to see and opt-in, too! This can help you grow your email list for free!
4. Optimize Your Photos
We talked a little bit about your profile and cover photo when making a Facebook page, but now it’s time to revisit them.
Now that you’re Page has been up a little while let’s make sure that:
- Your profile picture is bright, clear, and of your face.
- Add a caption to both pictures – Introduce yourself and link to your lead magnet here too!
- Check out your cover photo across a few devices to make sure it’s showing well. The most important part of the image should be in the center to be seen across most devices.
5. Check Your Facebook Insights Often
Your Facebook Insights will help you see what is working and what isn’t. It can also show you when your audience is online (aka a great time to post) and what types of posts they engage with most on your page.
It can even show you your competitors as well.

7. Share Your Facebook Page Outside of Facebook
Adding your Facebook link to your email address and letting your newsletter subscribers know about your new page can be quick ways to gain more likes.
You can also add a share button to your blog where a reader can share a post from the blog straight to Facebook! We love Social Pug at this time, but that can always change too.
You can also embed a Facebook post into your blog by going to a specific post and clicking the arrow in the top right. Choose “embed” and copy the code to your blog post. This allows people to react or comment on it easily within your blog post.
