What is Reddit?
Reddit is an online social platform where users can post and discuss anything from politics to funny memes. Users can also provide comments and vote on content either up or down. This voting system helps the prevent spammers and self-promoters from taking over the site.
How Does Reddit Work?
Who is on Reddit?
As I researched if Reddit made sense for our blog, I found the demographics to be all over the place age wise. Some sources stated it was young millennials while others suggested Reddit was made up of middle age guys.
With that said, we do know that the platform is dominated by mostly men. One thing to keep in mind though is that communities (aka subreddits) offer their own demographics based on topics. So while the platform is heavily male, you could find your ideal female client in a subreddit on parenting or DIY.
Here’s a little bit more on who we found to be on Reddit:
-
Liberal Thinkers
-
Gender: 20% Women
-
Age: Ranged from 19-45
-
Income: $25,000-$50,000 per year.
-
Location: Mostly the U.S. and Canada
-
Behavior: Mobile users
2 Types of Content on Reddit
Best Practices on Reddit
Here’s a brief look at a few best practices for Reddit marketing:
- Profile: Use your real name or a non-branded name
- Links: Always use the long url versus a bit.ly or shortened link
- Best Time to Post: Early morning on a weekday
-
Focus on Your Title: Long & descriptive titles do the best. Consider using questions and [tags] in your title as well.
-
Images: Focus on creative images that use bright colors. Round images versus square typically do well.
What Does Well on Reddit
Unique, funny, and interesting content does the best on Reddit. The platform also loves video and personal stories that warm the heart or offer an underdog type scenario.
One way to decide on what to post is to look at what is doing well for others and create better content around that topic.
You may also do well on the platform if your niche is in education, photography (including art and comics), video games, or music.
Other popular topics that may fit your overall target audience are food and fitness.
What are Subreddits? How Do They Work?
Subreddits are the communities on the platform. Each Subreddit has their own unique rules and cultures. You can find one by looking up a keyword or by name, and you’ll see the most valued content by clicking on the “Top” tab.
Typically it’s easier to share to smaller subreddits than the larger ones just because of competition. By choosing a smaller sub-reddit community you’ll also be able to niche down into your topic and community better.
Does Reddit Marketing Make Sense for You?
Using Reddit as part of your marketing will more than likely depend on your niche. It also will depend on if you like the platform or not.
There are dozens of places for us to share our content like Youtube, Instagram and Facebook to name a few. While it’s important to diversify our social media presence, it’s also important to know you can’t be an expert in all things.
So we suggest picking 1 or 2 platforms that make the most sense for your niche and goals and go from there.

Avoid Doing These Things on Reddit
Reddit is very quick to ban anyone who looks like a spammer or a self-promoter. If you have an account already and haven’t been following the best practices, you should see if you’ve been banned without knowing it.
One way to tell is to log out of your account and then search for your name. If it doesn’t show your profile, you’ve likely been banned. You’ll need to credit a new account and start over.
Here Are a Few More Tips to Not Get Banned on Reddit
You don’t want to:
-
submit same content multiple times (even on different subreddits)
-
use Reddit only for self-promotion (10% of your content 90% of others)
-
ask for upvotes
-
share your or anyone else’s private information
Using Reddit for Content Ideas
Reddit is a great place to find out what your ideal clients are talking or asking about. By searching our subreddits in your niche, you can sort and see what the top topics are.
From there, you could search out those topics using a keyword tool like SEMRush or AHREFs and see if it makes sense for you to write about.
You may also find really great content ideas in the comments section of each top post. Sometimes writing a blog post to answer a specific question can do really well!
You can also use TrackReddit.com to track keywords related to your brand and content strategy.
