I decided to try custom shampoo and conditioner last year after seeing so many Function of Beauty Reviews! I get highlights and maintain them every 6-weeks, and my hair was feeling dry and frizzy. Below is my honest review of the customized products.
What is Function of Beauty?
Function of Beauty claims to the be “the world’s first fully customizable hair care brand.” While they started with custom shampoo and conditioners, they now offer customized shampoo, conditioner, purple shampoo for blondes, leave-in conditioner, hair masks, hair serum, and hair mist.
They’ve also expanded their skin care and body care lines. They currently have customized body wash and lotion, as well as, facial serum, moisturizer, and cleanser.
Each one of the Function of Beauty products are fully customizable!
There is a quick quiz you take to find your hair profile and set your goals. From there you can pick a unique fragrance and color for your shampoo and conditioner sets. The same is true about the skincare and body wash products. Each set of products offer one-of a-kind formulas.
Function of Beauty is also made from clean ingredients.
Every ingredient passes European Union safe cosmetics regulations and is considered to be 100% vegan, non-toxic and cruelty-free. This is a pretty big deal!

My Hair & Goals Before Trying Function of Beauty Shampoo & Conditioner
Before trying Function of Beauty, I was using TIGI’s S-Factor Diamond Dreams. I also tried Alterna, but I had to wash my hair too often with it.
I have straight, thick hair, and I’ve been coloring it (bleaching really) for the past 19 years. I also curl it a few times a week.
The Ordering Experience
- As soon as I clicked on the site, the hair quiz popped up.
- Once you tell them about your hair, you can choose your hair goals. You can also select a silicone-free formula at this step.
- Then you can pick a color and a fragrance.
- From there Function of Beauty shows you your customized formula, and you can add-on items or check out.
My Function of Beauty Review
I love the idea of taking a hair quiz to find the best shampoo and conditioner! The quiz was super easy and really dialed in on my hair type and goals.
From the quiz, I found out my hair type is straight, fine, and oily.
My hair goals are to increase shine, reduce frizz, strengthen, hydrate, and control oil. (You can pick up to 5)
You can also choose the color you want each of your hair products to be.
Smell
You can also pick a fragrance and the amount of smell you want. I love a good smelling product!! I chose high potency in nude peach. Oh my gosh – it smells so good!! It really holds to my hair too which I love!
When the custom shampoo and conditioner arrived, it was in a cute box and included 2 pumps and stickers to decorate the bottles. So cute!
*I started with peach, but since I’ve been going with lavender because it uses essential oils!

Pumps
One of my pumps broke within the first week! I was disappointed and reached out to their Facebook page.

I haven’t had any issues otherwise, and I love how silky my hair feels!!
How My Hair Feels After Custom Shampoo and Conditioner
My hair is less dry and more shiny. I still am washing it every 2-3 days so I can’t say it’s helped with the oil – but I’ve tried other “1 week wash” shampoos, and even those don’t cut it for me!
I also use Fanola once a week to help my blonde highlights stay ashy. It’s the best purple shampoo I’ve found!
A few things I really like about Function of Beauty shampoo & conditioner are that they use natural ingredients and also have formulas for different hair types.
While I don’t have curly hair, I have seen several great before and after photos of women having better curl definition after using the products.
Function of Beauty Price
It can be pricey – especially compared to drugstore shampoos and conditioners. Since I was already spending around $40 on my hair products, I decided to go for it.

I have not tried many of their new products. I will say I didn’t care for their leave-in conditioner though.

Does Function of Beauty Shampoo work?
I’ve now been using Function of Beauty for over 12 months, and I love it. Function of Beauty’s shampoo recommends to use the shampoo twice (lather, rinse, and repeat) for best results.
Normally, I don’t repeat shampoo, but I have to with this line. I don’t feel like it lathers well the first time (which it says it may not). Then the second wash I can really get it to lather up!
I worried using it twice would make it run out fast – and while I’m using double what I planned, it’s still lasting a long time!
Can you return Function of Beauty?
Yes, you can return your custom shampoo and conditioner for another reformulation. Function of Beauty doesn’t offer a money-back guarantee though.
Prose vs Function of Beauty
When I was researching custom shampoo, Prose also came up a lot!
Prose is another custom shampoo and conditioner company with a hair quiz to create your unique formulation.
While I liked their the quiz the best, I decided on their pre-shampoo mask only. I had read that some people loved it and since my hair was dry, I went for it.
The Pose pre-shampoo mask is customized for your hair and goals as well. My formulation has me apply it once a week to the middle to ends of my hair.
I actually thought it was more of a scalp treatment when I ordered. So to receive what I consider to be a deep conditioning mask was kind of a disappointment. I was wanting a scalp treatment for the oil in my hair.
Since each formulation is different, you may end up getting something to use on your scalp versus the ends of your hair though, too.
The reason I didn’t go with Prose was just that it cost more. The hair mask alone was $38.
