We’re so excited to do an At Home Series this Fall! We’re kicking it off with how to make your home comfy by engaging all 5 of your senses!
With more of us at home than ever — it’s important that we learn to transition between work and rest, and one way to do that is being mindful of how our homes look, feel, and smell when we are ready to unwind!
It’s also a lot easier to create a comfy home than you’d think, too!
Why it’s Important
We want all of our 5 senses to feel comfortable and at peace when we’re home. Because when just one of them is off – it can mess up the whole vibe we have going.
For example, think about when you’re at a nice restaurant, the food is ah-mazing, the atmosphere is gorgeous, smells of yummy food and cinnamon is all around you, and the piano is just the right level of volume….but you’re freezing!
You think about, and maybe even say, “I’m cold!” …Which messes up you fully relaxing and enjoying!
5 Tips to Getting Comfy at Home
1. Sight
We all know what a messy house makes you feel like!
For us, it feels like we have a messy life! That life is too chaotic and too busy to clean. Even just having too much stuff out can make us feel off balance.
For Sight, we want to remove or clutter! Kid toys in a chest, blankets in a basket, mail gets gone through and tossed each day, school work has a place to go…basically everything has a spot.
Just that one step makes a huge difference! You can also plan with colors and textures! Choose a photo you love, and use that as your color palette for a room. Choose blankets and throw pillows in these colors, and aim for a them to be different textures to create a soothing space!
We also love to bring some outside in! Consider a nice plant or faux-floral stems!
2. SMELL
We may go nose-blind to the smell of our house, but that isn’t always a good thing! The smell of your house can be strongest of all our senses — think about why realtors bake with cookies!
We recommend removing any stinky odors (trash, litter, etc) then cook something like cookies!
We also love our candles — pumpkin apple is my favorite or anything vanilla, cinnamon, or sandalwood!
3. TOUCH
Now we want to focus on what your home FEELS like!
We love oversized, fluffy furniture and splurged on nice feather pillow inserts for our throw pillows!
We also love a soft blanket or quilt on the couch!
4. Sound
We often don’t even think about what we’re hearing when we’re in a task – working, cooking, getting ready, etc. but when you add in sound it elevates everything – including your mood!
Eliminate harsh sounds when possible (alarm clock)
Turn on music — Classical music, instrumental music, and jazz are all great options for mood music.
5. Taste
We love to sit down after a long day with a cup of tea or hot chocolate when it’s cooler, and we love a glass of lemonade in the summer!
If you’re entertaining, we like to have drinks pre-made so that someone can have something as they come in and get settled. We also like to have finger foods out because it gives them something to munch on and creates those yummy smells!
