You’ll be surprised how easy it is to make homemade cream horns! Our Hawaiian cream horns are light, fluffy and delicious! They’re the perfect dessert for holidays, family get-togethers, and parties!
We fell in love with cream horns after visiting Stillwellβs in Wailuku on our trip to Maui. The whole bakery is full of amazing homemade pastries and desserts, but our favorite had to be the cream horns! Oh my goodness! They were so good!! Luckily, we learned how to make cream horns at home now, too!
Are cream horns cannolis?
A cream horn is a pastry puff filled with whipped cream filling. Unlike a cannoli, the outside is softer and shaped like a horn.
Can you freeze cream horns?
You can freeze cream horns! You’ll want to bake them following the directions below and then place them in a freezer-safe airtight container. To serve, just set it out 2-3 hours to thaw.
We love to make cream horns ahead of time, and then, we can either enjoy one at a time whenever the craving hits or thaw a batch of them for a family party or holiday.
Recipe Variations
You can customize this recipe to fit your preferences! We love the idea of dipping them in chocolate like the ones we ate at Stillwell’s!
You could also:
- Add fruit preserves to the pastry and then top with the cream filling.
- Drizzle chocolate on the top of the pastry or drop chocolate into the bottom of the pastry before filling with cream.
- Mix in a little Nutella, peanut butter, or chocolate into the cream filling recipe for a new flavor!
- Top with powdered sugar as we did!
What if you don’t have cream horn molds?
I personally ordered a set of cream horn molds from Amazon because they shipped quickly and were pretty cheap. If you don’t have cream horn molds, you could also use a sugar ice cream cone wrapped in aluminum foil. If you don’t have an ice cream cone, you could also try to shape a cone out of aluminum foil.
What if you don’t have a piping bag?
Traditionally, you’d use a piping bag to get the cream horn filling into the pastry, but if you don’t have one you could use a knife or cut a hole into a ziplock bag and fill the bag with filling. I used a knife to stuff our homemade cream horns.
How do you make cream horns from scratch?
You’ll need puff pastry, cream cheese, butter, sugar, lemon juice, vanilla extract, whipped topping, and confectioner’s sugar to make homemade cream horns from scratch.
Once you have your ingredients, you’ll want to:
- Heat your oven to 400 degrees and spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray.
- Cut your pastry puff into 6 even slices.
- Wrap each slice around the cream horn mold starting at the pointed end and working towards the opening. Place the mold seam-side down on to the baking sheet.
- Bake for about 12 minutes or until golden brown.
- Remove the pastry horns from oven, top with the 2 tbsp melted butter, and allow them cool to room temperature before removing the molds.
- While the pastry cools, mix the cream cheese and sugar together in a medium mixing bowl using an electric mixer on medium speed for about 1 minute. Add lemon juice, 4 tbsp melted butter, vanilla extract, and beat until blended. Fold in whipped topping until filling is smooth and fluffy.
- Begin filling each pastry horn with cream horn filling (using a piping bag, a ziplock with a hole in it, or a butter knife).
- Dust horns with confectioners’ sugar.
- Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before enjoying.
