My ashy blonde highlights always turn brassy, and it drives me crazy. I hunted down the best purple shampoo and found Fanola No Yellow Shampoo to work great!

If you’ve never used a purple shampoo before, they’re great for grey or lightened hair that has turned brassy or yellow. They can be super drying though!
Before and After Using Fanola No Yellow Shampoo
This picture is after using it twice – once for 1 minute and again for 2 minutes. I just blow-dried my hair (no styling) in the 2nd picture (left pic was air dried).
So if it looks a little stringy – it’s because I blow-dried it quickly versus with putting a ton of intention behind it.
After seeing my hair, my mom, Kim, wanted to use it, too! Here’s her before and after using it just once leaving it on for 2 minutes.

What is Fanola No Yellow Shampoo?
It’s a thick purple shampoo that breaks through yellow tones in light blonde and platinum color hair.
Pros
- Brings hair back to that ashy blonde color
- Convenient between hair appointments
- Affordable
Cons
- Can dry out your hair
- May stain your hands temporarily (I didn’t have any issues though).
- Smells like salon-grade chemicals
How Long Should You Leave Fanola No Yellow Shampoo On?
The bottle recommends 1 to 5 minutes. I started with 1 minute on wet hair, and it helped some.
Since it wasn’t as light as I wanted, I did 2 minutes the next day. Now, I will just use it 1-2 minutes each week or as needed.
It can be tempting to want to go for the full 5 minutes, but if you leave it on too long, your brassy pieces will go from yellow to white to purple!! Eek! So it’s better to aim on the side of caution.
How Often Do I Use Fanola Purple Shampoo?
It’s recommended to use Fanola No Yellow Shampoo once a week or as needed.
Is Fanola Purple Shampoo Damaging to The Hair?
Just like coloring and toning your hair can be damaging – this is the same. Any purple shampoo can dry out your hair, and since this one is so strong – I imagine it’s one we all need to be careful with.
With that said – I’ll be using it 1x a week or as it needs because I don’t want the brassy color.
I did purchase a hair mask to use 1x a week too just to help it gain back some moisture.
I chose amika’s Soulfood Nourishing Mask because it had good reviews, but you could pick any mask.
Where Can I Buy Fanola Purple Shampoo?
It’s available in a lot of places, but I ordered mine off of amazon.
