19 Fun Dance Party Games for Adults and Kids
When youâre hosting an party, it can be hard to get your guests involved in party activities. But everyone loves to dance!
That means these dance party games are the perfect ice breaker for any event. Try introducing one of these dancing games the next time your party needs a pick-me-up.
1. Musical Laps
The popular childrenâs game, musical chairs, requires you to start with a circle of chairs made up of half the number seats for people in the game.
As the music plays, the players must walk or dance around in a circle.
But when the music stops, everyone must find a seat or lap to sit on. Anyone without a seat is out.
Remove a chair from the circle after each round until only one couple is left standing.
2. Remember the Moves
How well can you remember the dance moves? Test your memory with this fun dance party game!
Have everyone stand in a large circle around the dance floor.
One person enters the center of the circle and does one dance move, then returns to their spot.
After that, a second person goes to the center and repeats the first move and adds their own move.
Each new dancer must repeat all the dance moves before them before adding their own to the routine.
If someone doesnât remember a step or messes up the rhythm, theyâre out.
3. Dance Groups
To play this dance party game, send everyone to the dance floor to start dancing to an upbeat tune.
After the song has played for a minute or two, whoever is acting as DJ will stop the music and call out a number between 2 and 5.
As soon as the number is called, everyone on the dance floor must come together in a group made up of that number. Who ever is not part of a group is out.
4. Style Switch
Show off your knowledge of dance styles with this game. Start by playing an upbeat song and asking everyone to come to the dance floor.
As the song plays, randomly call out different dance styles (disco, ballroom, ballet, hip hop, square dance, etc.).
When a new style is announced, all the dancers must switch their dance moves to fit that particular style.
5. Limbo
You donât need any special equipment to play limbo at your party. Just grab a string or stick to create a limbo bar!
Have two people hold the bar at the same height, then let all the players try to go under the bar without touching it or falling to the floor.
After each round, lower the bar slightly.
Continue playing until only one player is left.
6. Elimination Dance
Before the party starts, write down characteristics that would pertain to a variety of your guests, such as someone wearing glasses or anyone with black high heels.
Cut the paper into strips and put them in a hat or bowl.
When the game begins, start a dance song and ask everyone to come together on the dance floor.
As the music plays, pull the strips out of the hat and call them out loud.
Anyone who fits the description must leave the dance floor. The last person on the floor wins the game.
7. Character Conga
Add a fun new element to a classic conga line with this fun party game. Play a conga beat and have everyone line up one in front of the other.
The person at the front of the line must then come up with a silly walk or dance move to do as the music plays.
After demonstrating the move, everyone in the line must replicate it as they dance around the room.
Once all the people in the line have completed the move, the person in front runs to the back of the line and the game repeats with a new leader.
8. Partner Switch
Ask one of your party guests to stand in the center of the dance floor and hold a flag, scarf, or hat.
Then, ask everyone else to partner up and start to dance.
After the music has played for a few seconds, the person in the center will toss the flag in the air, signaling to all the dancers that they must switch partners.
At this time, the person in the middle must also find a partner, leaving one extra player.
Whoever is left without a partner will move to the center of the dance floor to start the round over again.
10. Dance Charades
Dance charades combines dancing skills and trivia for a fun twist on a classic game!
The host of the party will want to prepare slips of folded paper with a popular dance movie or dance moves. Some examples would be the Saturday Night Fever or Dirty Dancing for a movie or popular dance moves like the Macarena, Jitter bug, Cha-Cha Slide, The Twist, Conga Line, or the Electric Slide.
You’ll want to separate into small teams — for large groups, you may have a few teams. Each player will draw a slip of paper and act it out.
The first team to a set number of correct guesses wins! You could do a small prize or just let them gloat the rest of the night!
Note: This is a great game for adults, but it may be too hard for younger children and teens.
11. Spotlight
If you have access to a spotlight for your party, as well as, someone to operate it – this game can be so much fun!
The party guests will dance and the spotlight person will move it at random times to different dancers. When the spotlight lands on them, it’s their time to shine with their best moves!
But whenever the music stops, the spotlight does too. This puts the dancer on the spot and he or she is eliminated from the game. It continues until only the last player is left on the dance floor.
12. Tag the Table
If you have a large number of guests — say for a wedding or reunion — this dance party game for adults (and kids) is a great choice!
There are several different ways to play, but the main idea is to have people at one table work together as a team.
The DJ or party’s host could call 2 tables to do a dance-off, or you could assign each table a specific dance move to do when their number is called.
Another option is to have a table dance one at a time, and whenever the DJ says “Freeze” they have to turn into a musical statue. Whoever moves is out — continue going until only one player or table remains.
You could also have small awards for the best tables! This game could also work with live music if the band’s leader will do the DJ’s role.
13. Spot Dance
Guests pair off into couples, and each couple has a specific spot to dance. As the music plays, they aren’t allowed to step out of their spot.
This becomes increasingly harder as the music speeds up — because each couple must also speed up their dancing! Anytime any part of either dancer comes out of the designated spot, they’re out.
To make this fair and challenging, start with medium to large circles on the dance floor. Then, you could progress to small circles for the dances as they progress.
14. Create a Dance
Creating a dance can be a lot of fun and allow dancers to show off their creativity and skill! To do this dance party game, you’ll have guests line up as if they’re going to line dance.
Taking turns, each guest will step forward and do a dance move. Then, the next player must repeat the previous moves before adding their new move to the dance.
This really works best for teens and adults in a smaller group.
15. Dance Hats
Hand out a hat to 2 or 3 dance party guests. As the music plays, the hats should move around the dancers.
Each time the song stops, the players wearing a hat wins a prize.
If you want to make sure everyone wins a prize have the the winners of last round sit out for the next round.
16. Musical Islands
For musical islands, the party host will create different “islands” in the event space.
Examples of islands could be Hula, Robot, Disco, and Zombie Island. Each guest would dance like that island’s theme.
To play the game, have your guests stand in the middle of the dance floor, when the DJ starts playing music, have guests race to an island.
On the island, they have to do dance to the theme until the music stops. Then, when the music starts again, each guest races to another island.
You could also turn this into a version of musical chairs by allowing only so many guests to go to each island. Whoever doesn’t land on an island is eliminated for that round.
17. Dancing With the Ball
If you remember hot potato as a kid, Dancing with the Ball is very similar! Party guests stand in a circle and start dancing when the music starts — while passing around a ball! The person holding the ball when the music stops is out.
You could also do a variation of the game where everyone is dancing, and they must pass the ball without using their arms. Whoever drops the ball is out. Repeat until only one player remains.
18. Musical Statues / Freeze Dance
Musical Statues is a fun game for kids! You basically play music and when it stops, they have to freeze in their spot. Whoever doesn’t is out.
Another good idea is to set a theme beforehand, and each guest could dress up in a costume.
You could then award prizes for the best statue and themed costume!
19. Dancer Says
We’ve all played Simon Says before probably, but what if it was tied to dancing? Have one guest do 1 to 3 dance steps at a time and have the other guests copy the move — but only when the leader says “Dancer Says”
