What You’ll Need for this Hot Chocolate Bomb Recipe
- 1 12-ounce package dark chocolate chips
- 1 packet instant cocoa mix
- 1 cup mini pink marshmallows (or rainbow marshmallows)
- ¼ cup red melting chocolate
- ¼ cup white melting chocolate
- ¼ cup red sprinkles (white sprinkles work, too)
- 1 tablespoon heart sprinkles
- 6 cups hot milk to make the bombs
- Round silicone mold
You can also include your favorite Valentine’s Day treats inside instead. For example, pink chocolate wafers, white chocolate chips, or white chocolate mix are all great ideas.
Note: A metal bath bomb mold will not work well for this recipe.
How to Make Valentine’s Day Hot Cocoa Bombs
We’ll go over all of the details below, but we wanted to share a few pictures to show you how everything should look!
- Start by microwaving the dark chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl in 30 second intervals, stirring between each interval, until the chocolate chips are fully melted.
- Put a spoonful of melted chocolate inside one cup on the silicone mold and use the back of the spoon to spread the chocolate up the sides of the mold. Continue this process until all the molds are coated.
- Set the remaining chocolate aside for sealing and decorating the bombs.
- Allow the chocolate to set completely, around 2 to 3 hours. You can speed up the process by placing the chocolate in the refrigerator.
- When the chocolate is set, remove each of the chocolate pieces from the mold. Add a small amount of instant hot cocoa mix to half the pieces and top the hot cocoa mix with marshmallows and half the sprinkles.
- Reheat the chocolate in 15 second intervals until melted. Pick up an empty chocolate piece and dip the edges into the melted chocolate. Carefully place it on top of a filled piece and lightly press it into place. Use your finger to smooth melted chocolate around the seam. Continue until all the chocolate bombs are sealed.
- Melt the red and white chocolate according to the package instructions, then place the melted chocolate into piping bags. Drizzle the chocolate over the top of the bombs to decorate. Sprinkle red sprinkles over the top of the bombs and add three heart sprinkles to the top.
- Allow the chocolate decorations to set before using, around 1 hour.
- To make the hot chocolate bombs, place the bomb in the bottom of a mug. Pour one cup of hot milk over the top of the bomb to melt the chocolate. When the chocolate is completely melted, stir to combine.
How Do You Use a Hot Chocolate Bomb?
Hot cocoa bombs are so much fun to use! You just place it in your mug and then pour warm milk over it! Then, the bomb will start to melt. Stir gently and enjoy!
Note: We like to use whole milk because it makes your cocoa so creamy!
Tips to Making the Best Valentine’s Hot Chocolate Bombs
- You can use any type of hot milk with this Valentine’s Day hot cocoa bomb including almond and skim milk.
- You could even use hot water!
- As you melt your chocolate, make sure you continually stir it and don’t let it burn.
- You can also add in any candies you’d like to the middle! We just chose to use big pink marshmallows!
- You can also always customize this for any holiday!
Once you master the Valentine’s Day version of our hot chocolate bombs, you can also use the recipe as a fun treat year round!
On the inside, you could add in peppermint for Christmas or pumpkin spice for Halloween!
On the outside of the treat, we like to add festive sprinkles for Halloween, Christmas, or St. Patrick’s day as well!
You could even use food coloring and white candy melts to change the chocolate coloring.
How to Store Them
You’ll want to store these in an airtight container at room temperature.
How Long Do Hot Cocoa Bombs Last?
If you use instant hot chocolate like we did, they’ll last up to 2 months in the airtight container!

- Our mold held 15 half circles (5 circles down and 3 circles across).
