What is a Hot Chocolate Bomb?
A hot chocolate bomb or hot cocoa bomb is a small hollow chocolate ball filled with marshmallows, cocoa mix, and other goodies. The bomb melts as you pour hot milk over it — creating a delicious drink!
We love to play fun Christmas party games with our family at the beginning of December and then finish the night with these hot cocoa bombs!

What You Need to Make Chocolate Bombs
- 2 cups Red Candy Melts
- 2 cups Hot Cocoa Mix
- 2 cups Mini Marshmallows
- ¼ cup White Candy Melts
- ¼ cup Green Candy melts
- 24 Peppermint Christmas Candy
- Christmas Sprinkles
- Bath bomb molds (We used the largest one in this set – 2.37 inches wide)
Choosing the best mold
You can choose a silicone half sphere mold or a metal option like we used.
If you use a bath bomb set, just only use it for food.
How to Make Christmas Hot Chocolate Bombs Using a Metal Mold
- Place each of the candy melts in separate microwave safe bowls and melt in the microwave using the directions on the package.
- Place 1 tbsp of the red melted candy melt into one half of a bomb mold and, using the bottom of your tablespoon, press the chocolate up the sides of the mold, keeping it thick but even, taking care to gently work the chocolate against the chocolate already in the molds to work out air pockets. Repeat with 12 bomb mold halves.
- Place the chocolate filled bomb molds into the freezer for 5 minutes.
- Remove molds from the freezer and gently tap the sides of the mold, pressing on one side of the chocolate to make the chocolate slide out of the mold.
- Fill 6 of the molds with 1 tbsp hot chocolate mix, 1 of the Christmas candies and 7-9 mini marshmallows.
- Heat a plate or a flat-bottom bowl in the microwave until the surface of the plate is warm to the touch.
- Press one of the empty chocolate bomb halves open-side-down onto the flat portion of the warm plate for about 10 seconds. This will gently melt the rim of the chocolate cup.
- Immediately press this warmed edge chocolate cup to the top of one of the filled cups. This will join the two halves of the hot cocoa bomb.
- Using a piping bag or a fork, drizzle a small amount of the green and white candy melts over the assembled hot cocoa bombs then immediately follow by sprinkling the Christmas sprinkles over them.
- Place the hot cocoa bombs into the freezer for 5 minutes to get them to set, then remove and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use.
- Once you’re ready to use, place one of the hot chocolate bombs into a mug, pour in a cup of hot milk, and watch it melt! Stir and enjoy!
Note: You may have extra chocolate left over depending on how thick your sphere for the hot chocolate bomb is. We love to use microwave this chocolate again according to the directions and hand dip Oreo’s or pretzels!
How to Enjoy a Christmas Hot Chocolate Bomb
Get cozy by placing a hot chocolate bomb in a mug and then pour a cup of hot milk over it. Then watch it magically melt and release the goodies inside! Stir and enjoy!
Pair it With
We love to enjoy a cup of hot cocoa with Christmas cookies or additional whipped cream!
If you’re over 21, a little RumChata or peppermint schnapps is yummy too!
Tips for Making Hot Chocolate Bombs
- Read through the instruction before you begin.
- Be patient with your candy melts so you don’t scorch the chocolate.
- Make sure the chocolate is melted completely and is warm before you begin shaping it into the mold.
- Allow the chocolate to harden completely before removing it from the freezer and then the mold.
- Use high quality chocolate and whole milk for the best tasting Christmas hot chocolate bombs!
Is it better to make hot cocoa with milk or water?
We personally love to use whole milk because it makes the cocoa so creamy, but you could use hot water as well!
How to Store
Once you’ve created your hot chocolate bombs, you’ll want to store them in an airtight container in a dark pantry or cabinet until you’re ready to use.
