Cheeseburgers in the Instant Pot are super simple and require just a few basic ingredients to create a perfect weeknight dinner! Once you have the meat mixed up, all you have to do is wrap them up and steam them in the pressure cooker!
We became obsessed with In N Out when we first visited Las Vegas! If you’re unfamiliar with In-N-Out Burger, it’s a famous chain of fast food restaurants in the Western part of the United States. It’s known for its Double-Double Animal Style burgers, secret sauce, and fresh french fries!
Since we live in the Southeast, we rarely get to enjoy the real deal. So we wanted to create an easy Instant Pot Recipe to recreate the delicious cheeseburger! These pressure cooker burgers topped with secret sauce are ready in just 20 minutes and are one of our favorite family dinners!
The cool part about using the Instant Pot versus grilling, is that you can make this recipe any time of year and the cleanup is super easy too!
Can you make hamburgers in an Instant Pot?
Making hamburgers in the Instant pot is easy and delicious! You’ll want to mix together your patties then wrap them in aluminum foil or parchment paper. Then, you just add water to the inner pot of the pressure cooker with the patties on the trivet. Close the lid and set to high pressure for 10 minutes! Remove, top with your favorite toppings, and dinner is served!
What is in an In-N-Out burger patty?
An In-N-Out patty has fresh 100% USDA ground chuck beef.
What is the In-N-Out sauce made of?
In-N-Out Sauce is basically really good Thousand Island dressing! If you wanted to make your own, we like to combine 2 teaspoons mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon ketchup, and 2 teaspoons of pickle relish together. Delicious!
Ingredients for Instant Pot Hamburger:
- 1 lb. 80/20 ground beef
- 1 TBSP salt
- 1 TBSP pepper
- ½ TBSP onion powder
- 3 hamburger buns
- 3 TBSP Thousand Island dressing
- ½ tomato, sliced
- 3 iceberg lettuce leaves
- 3 slices American cheese
- ½ onion, sliced
How to Cook Hamburgers in Instant Pot
- Mix together your beef, salt, pepper, and salt.
- Divide the meat into 3 sections and pat them into 3 flat patties. Wrap them in aluminum foil.
- Add 1 ½ cups of water to the inner pot of the Instant Pot. Place the trivet inside with your patties (in aluminum) on the trivet.
- Close the lid on your IP. Close the sealing valve. Set your IP to High Pressure for 10 minutes.
- When the 10 minutes has finished, do a quick release.
- Remove the patties from the aluminum foil.
- Create your own copycat In-N-Out burger. Add your Thousand Island dressing to the bottom bun, and top with tomato, lettuce, burger, cheese, and onion slice.
How to Check the Doneness of the Meat
The doneness of the meat can be predicted by the cook-time.
- Frozen Burgers – 12 Minutes
- Rare Burgers – 7 Minutes
- Medium-Well Burgers – 9 Minutes
- Well-Done Burgers – 10 Minutes
Can I Use Parchment Paper Instead of Aluminum Foil?
You can, but both the aluminum foil and parchment paper will be full of hot juices and steam – so be careful as you remove them from the Instant Pot.
Hacks to Make the Best Instant Pot Burger Taste Like a Copycat In-N-Out Burger
- Make sure all 3 patties are the same size and thickness
- Make an indention in the center of each patty to keep it flat while it cooks
- While the burgers are cooking, toast the buns lightly
- Be careful removing the patties from the pressure cooker because they will be full of hot juices and steam.
- If you want to add cheese, you can do so while the burgers are still warm. If it doesn’t melt, place on a baking sheet and place under the broiler until the cheese is melted.
Additional Burger Toppings
Your Copycat In-N-Out Burger should have fresh lettuce, tomatoes, raw onions, their famous spread over the toasted bun. The spread is Thousand Island dressing.
You can always add in your own toppings to your Instant Pot Burger though!

Can You Make These Pressure Cookers Ahead of Time?
Yes, you can cook the burgers ahead of time, but we suggest not toasting the buns or assembling them until you’re ready to eat.
If you decide to make them ahead of time, place the patties in the fridge in an airtight container until you’re ready to enjoy! They’ll last about 3 days in the refrigerator or you can freeze them for up to 3 months.
How to Serve Your Copycat In-N-Out Cheeseburger
In-N-Out burgers are served with fresh cut french fries. You could also make them Animal Style by topping the fries with melted American cheese, caramelized onions and a the In-N-Out spread.
