This Hawaiian banana bread recipe is the perfect combination of sweet and savory! When Jake and I went on our Maui vacation in 2019, we fell in love Aunt Sandy’s delicious banana bread, and I was determined to recreate the tropical taste!

The whole trip was absolutely amazing, and Keโanae was our favorite spot on the whole island! It’s on the Road to Hana, and the road to visit Keโanae and Aunt Sandy’s is just a little bitty road tucked away – so don’t miss it if you visit!
You’ll want to grab you a snack at Sandy’s and then drive on down to see the gorgeous black rock, coconut trees, and amazingly blue waters!
But back to the banana bread! If you aren’t planning on visiting the island soon, no worries — you can recreate the original recipe at home!
What You Need To Make Hawaiian Banana Bread
The recipe makes 2 loaves and calls for:
- 3 1/2 cups self rising flour
- 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
- 2 cups light brown sugar, packed
- 1 cup margarine, melted and hot
- 5 overripe bananas with lots of brown spots, mashed with a mixer
- Cooking spray, canola oil, or parchment paper for the loaf pan

- Large bowl
- Small bowl
- Hand mixer
How to Make The Best Banana Bread
- Start by mixing the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
- Add mashed banana mixture to the dry mix.
- Melt 1 cup margarine and slowly fold it into the mixture (the margarine needs to be hot in this step)
- Mix well and pour batter into greased or lined with parchment paper bread pans
- Bake at 330 degrees for 40 minutes or until light gold brown.
- Let it cool and then flip to loosen from the pan.
The Little Secret to Creating Super Moist Bread
There is a little secret to making this flavorful banana bread! You really want that margarine to be hot as you fold it into the bread.
Also, make sure to just fold, or stir, it in versus using the hand mixer at that step. This will keep the bread light versus tough.
How to Cut & Store Hawaiian Banana Bread
This bread has so much moisture in it that you’ll want to cut it with a sharp knife and the store the rest of the loaf in plastic wrap or aluminum foil at room temperature.
Can you freeze this banana bread?
Yes, you can freeze it. We recommend wrapping it up and then placing it in a large freezer bag.
